Geo-Coupon is an on-demand coupon app using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). The app has been developed by Che-Tsung Lin and Yun-Te Su (the Idea Holders) of the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan. Geo-Coupon provides purpose-driven digital coupons according to predetermined rules, such as whether the user has visited branch stores for a limited duration. Geo-Coupon makes it possible to verify if this is indeed the case. The app could also be synchronised so it would not only allow access via Facebook, but also promote the branch stores users have visited to their social network. Once different goals are achieved by Geo-Coupon users, the corresponding reward – coupons in the form of QR codes with unique serial numbers – are instantly available. In a nutshell, Geo-Coupon is a location-based coupon service which benefits both chain stores and consumers.
Following a competition in which a number of Living Labs of the European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL) submitted proposals to trial the Geo-Coupon idea and app, DSLL was selected as the winner to trial Geo-Coupon in Sofia, Bulgaria, from February until August 2012. The main aim of the trial performed by DSLL for Geo-Coupon was to capture and establish user needs and requirements in terms of geo-coupon desirability and suitability, to suggest enhancements in the Geo-Coupon app user interface (UI), user experience (UX) and service, and to test the improved Geo-Coupon app in field trials with real users at three locations in Sofia.
